WHAT IS A CHAPERONE?
A chaperone is a trained member of our healthcare team who can be present during an examination, consultation or procedure. They support you, protect your dignity and privacy, and provide reassurance.
YOUR RIGHTS
• You will be offered a chaperone for any intimate or sensitive examination
• You may ask for a chaperone at any time
• You can choose to decline a chaperone
• You may request a chaperone of a particular gender
WHEN IS A CHAPERONE OFFERED?
• For intimate examinations (for example involving breasts, genitalia, rectum, or removal of underwear)
• If an examination may feel personal or uncomfortable
• Whenever you request one
WHAT DOES A CHAPERONE DO?
• Stays with you throughout the examination
• Respects your privacy and confidentiality
• Provides support and reassurance
• Observes the examination and raises concerns if needed
IF YOU DECLINE A CHAPERONE
• Your choice will be respected
• This will be recorded in your medical notes
• In rare cases, the clinician may explain why a chaperone is needed
IF A CHAPERONE IS NOT AVAILABLE
• We may offer to delay or rebook your appointment unless urgent care is required
CONFIDENTIALITY
All staff, including chaperones, follow strict confidentiality rules.
