Health Visitors are part of the NHS. In Oxfordshire they work as part of your local Primary Health Care team with your GP and other community nurses. All Health Visitors are qualified nurses who have had an additional training in family and child health, health promotion and education.
Health visitors work with the whole family in their home, at the local surgery, clinic or in the local community. They work with families and children of all ages and have special expertise in the everyday challenges of parenthood e.g. from dental health and healthy eating to difficult behaviour and postnatal depression.
Health Visitors are accessible to everyone. Anyone can contact a Health Visitor and arrange to see them at home or at their base for advice or support at a mutually agreeable time. Families can also access some services directly or the Health visitor can help you identify whom you can contact.
Health Visitors are not necessarily able to detect illness in your baby and if you have any concerns about your baby's health you have the right to consult your GP at any time.
Some Health Visitors are now qualified to diagnose and treat a few limited conditions such as nappy rash and oral thrush. However generally they will not be in a position to diagnose most illness and will on occasions make an assessment of a child's condition and then refer back to the GP for a full diagnosis.
The overall aim of the service is to work in partnership with you to help you and your family lead as healthy a life as possible, both mentally and physically.
